Rays of Hope
CRY UK supported project Gram Swaraj Sangh (GSS) works in the hamlets of Kutch in the western state of Gujarat, India.
These hamlets are located in remote areas and lack several basic amenities. Lack of a school nearby deterred a lot of parents from sending their children to school.
The GSS team, as part of their efforts to get the children an education, prepared a list of children in the hamlets who are of school going age and enrolled these children into a school which is located at a distance of around 5 kms from their homes.
Despite enrolment, the prevailing hesitation among parents and concern for the safety of their children so far away from home, resulted in a high dropout rate and irregular attendance. To address these concerns GSS members along with the school committee members advocated with the local Panchayat for a school in these hamlets.
GSS team and the local sangathan arranged meetings with education officers at tehsil, district and state levels and strongly advocated for a school. Their persistent advocacy efforts even found place in the regional newspapers.
Their continuous and determined efforts have yielded fruit, and now, 3 schools have been sanctioned and started in Kamuvara vand, Patadiya vand and Trikam vand in Rapar tehsil. More than 50 children are studying in these schools today!
